The mansion's construction involved skilled craftsmen and artisans, and by 1855, the house was complete. Its appearance was a mesmerizing blend of Creole and Victorian influences, often called “Steamship Gothic” by later admirers, because it resembled a large riverboat in full riverine flourish. Raised on a sturdy brick base to accommodate the swampy, flood-prone terrain, the house features sweeping double staircases leading to a broad balcony wrapping three sides of the home, supported by ornate wrought-iron columns.
