Sadly, Marmillion himself only enjoyed his masterpiece briefly. In 1856, just a year after the house’s completion, Edmond Marmillion died at age 51. His wife and most of his children followed in quick succession—many succumbing to illnesses like tuberculosis and yellow fever that were common in Louisiana at the time. Only two sons, Valsin and Charles, survived to adulthood, both affected by the family’s ongoing health struggles. The personal losses cast a shadow over what was intended to be a symbol of hope and legacy.
