Complementing his achievements in golf, McDonald sought a personal retreat to reflect his success and passion. He built Ballyshear—an estate reminiscent of Scottish aristocratic mansions—upon a scenic stretch of Long Island coastline. Situated near the NGLA, Ballyshear was completed around 1913, designed by architect F. Boral Hoffman Jr., embodying the Georgian Revival style with red brick, limestone accents, and balanced proportions.
