Understanding the conflict requires insight into the motivations of both Russia and Ukraine, as well as the internal dynamics within Kyiv. For instance, the Russian perspective is not solely about territorial conquest but also involves political considerations. Russia claims some of the occupied Ukrainian territories as part of its own, citing legal and historical arguments that are widely contested internationally.
From Russia’s point of view, the annexation and control of these territories serve strategic and nationalistic objectives, particularly given the significance of the Black Sea Fleet and the strategic importance of Crimea. Despite international condemnation, Russian officials are unlikely to relinquish Crimea without significant concessions or settlement pressures.
