Dutch Influence in the New York and New Jersey Corridors
The Dutch settlers who arrived in the Hudson River Valley and parts of New Jersey brought with them building traditions from Holland and Flanders. Dutch colonial homes are instantly recognizable by their stepped or gambrel roofs, which allow full use of the second floor without overly tall walls, and their use of durable stone or brick materials—testaments to the Dutch preference for resilient construction.
