Hanson began by recounting an incident in the Senate where, prior to going live, the Senate President led a formal welcome to country. In response, all four senators from the One Nation party turned their backs during the ceremony, an act Hanson described as a deliberate protest. She explained that she and her colleagues have been doing this for about three years as a form of protest against what they perceive as overreach and tokenism in Indigenous recognition practices.
"I haven't just done it recently, and it wasn't the first time yesterday," Hanson stated. "The reaction from the public has been overwhelmingly supportive... people are saying, 'Good on you. You're standing up for us.'"
