Hanson expressed her view that the "Welcome to Country" has become a routine, almost obligatory act, which she believes is overdone and unnecessary on many occasions, especially in contexts such as parliament sessions or public events. She emphasized her belief that it is a sign of respect when done in appropriate settings, like major indigenous events or cultural festivals, but not as a standard part of every official gathering.
"I do not want a welcome to country to be a routine in parliament or in everyday public functions," she argued. "It's polite, yes, but overused, and now it feels divisive."
