In the interview, Hanson also drew a contrast between Indigenous land acknowledgments and Christian prayers, which are more commonly accepted in public institutions. She pointed out that certain traditions, like the Christian prayer in the Senate, are part of Australia's historical fabric, and they are performed as a sign of respect for the majority religion, which she sees as a different matter altogether.

"Christian prayers have been part of our history," Hanson said. "We acknowledge these practices as part of our shared history, but Indigenous acknowledgments, in her view, are not necessarily the same and too often seem obligatory versus respectful."
