Part 11/13:
Historically, American history features a handful of successful state boundary changes, such as Kentucky’s independence from Virginia (1792), Maine’s separation from Massachusetts (1820), and the formation of West Virginia during the Civil War (1863). However, such acts are rare and require considerable political consensus.
The current Oregon movement could represent a significant, if challenging, step towards redefining state boundaries in the 21st century. Whether it will succeed depends on political will in Oregon and Idaho, legal pathways, and national interest.
