The logistics and package delivery sectors are engaged in a fierce competition to reduce operational costs. Both UPS and competitors are leveraging AI, automation, and network reconfigurations—an industry-wide "race" to do more with less. Companies are increasingly relying on natural attrition, voluntary buyouts, and strategic facility closures to eliminate excess capacity, especially in low-margin areas.
There’s also a growing recognition that job cuts are not solely about layoffs but about restructuring the workforce through attrition and early retirement offers. Unionized workers, particularly those with seniority, are likely to be insulated longer from layoffs, but the overall trend points toward a leaner industry model with fewer jobs.
