It is important to note that Mexico’s election was not peaceful in a broader sense. The period leading up to the votes was marked by violence—considered one of the deadliest in the country’s history—with drug cartels actively targeting political candidates. Local and regional elections involved millions of votes, with thousands of local races contested. Overall, roughly 20,000 positions were on the line, involving extensive political violence, including assassinations, threats, and intimidations.
