Human DNA is astonishingly similar across individuals—less than 0.1% of our DNA differs from person to person. These tiny differences, known as variants, hold the key to understanding a vast array of health conditions. Some variants are benign, but many can influence disease risk. For example, numerous common diseases such as heart disease are not caused by a single genetic mutation but are instead affected by thousands of different variants spread throughout our genome.
