While this scientific breakthrough sounds promising, it raises profound ethical questions. If living cells are involved in computational systems, they are, by definition, living entities. Developing these systems to mimic or even achieve human intelligence prompts the question: Would these bio-based systems have rights?
The issue becomes even more complex as these artificial brains become more sophisticated. At present, the biocomputing systems are quite rudimentary, but as research progresses, we inch closer to a dark frontier where such systems might possess consciousness or sentience.
