Unlike many disruptive startups that aim to radically overthrow existing industries, Cleveland believed in a different approach. Instead of attempting to conquer the art world from the outside, Artsy sought to work within the existing ecosystem. This strategic decision stemmed from a belief that galleries add significant value to the art industry, and that their role should be respected rather than replaced. Cleveland’s approach was to identify where Artsy could add the most value—by integrating seamlessly into the current market—thus encouraging collaboration rather than conflict.
