International student migration also declined by 13%, driven by tighter visas in major anglophone destinations—US, UK, Canada, and Australia—aimed at curbing visa fraud and alleviating housing shortages. However, overall migration to OECD nations only declined marginally by 4%, to about 6.2 million, with increases in humanitarian and family migration, partly due to rising asylum applications in the US and illegal small boat arrivals in the UK, which have fueled domestic political tensions.
