Evans’ career story is one of evolution and resilience. Growing up during the dawn of home computers, he initially aimed to become an engineer, writing to Apple before email was prevalent. Although he couldn't attend MIT, he graduated from Carnegie Mellon, fueling his journey into high-speed networking startups.
His early ventures spanned physical layer networking, internet search, network management, and digital advertising—each startup offering unique challenges and lessons. Notably, most startups except his first failed or flamed out, often forcing him to confront his abrasive style, which contributed to being laid off twice during his startup tenure.
