Less than 12 years after Sputnik's launch, mankind achieved one of its greatest milestones: the moon landing. In 1969, NASA's Apollo 11 mission saw astronaut Neil Armstrong take "a small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind" as he set foot on the lunar surface. The U.S. claimed victory in the space race, demonstrating technological superiority and expanding the horizons of human capability beyond Earth's atmosphere.
