Part 1/11:
Rethinking Robotics Ethics: The Flaws of Asimov's Three Laws and a New Approach
The Origins and Promise of Asimov's Three Laws
Isaac Asimov, a renowned scientist and prolific science fiction writer, introduced what have become some of the most iconic principles governing artificial intelligence in his stories. Known collectively as the Three Laws of Robotics, these rules were designed to ensure that autonomous machines would behave ethically and safely around humans. The laws are simple yet influential:
A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human to come to harm.
A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the first law.
