This intense focus negates the importance of the AGI label. In practice, AI systems today are already capable of performing tasks at or beyond human levels, with rapid advancements in natural language processing, image recognition, and machine learning.
The real concern isn’t the distant future but the current deployment of AI in ways that could be dangerous or manipulative, such as social credit systems, facial recognition, and targeted social engineering. The risk is not just from machines but from how humans choose to implement and control them.
