A fundamental insight from the results is that populism, both right and left, is redefining political coalitions worldwide. Europe, Japan, and Latin America have all experienced this shift away from traditional, establishment parties towards populist movements that position themselves as outsiders fighting against an aloof, disconnected elite.
In the U.S., the neocon/neoliberal establishment—represented by figures like Romney and Ryan—remains a significant obstacle. Their hold over the Republican Party threatens to prevent the party from fully aligning with the populist insurgency that Trump and many grassroots voters embrace.
