The implications extend far beyond vehicle sales. If Tesla chooses to license its autonomy stack—potentially through Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs)—it can mitigate competitive pressures, allow partner OEMs to integrate Tesla’s system, and create a broader autonomous ecosystem. However, such licensing also introduces delays; Tesla estimates that integration with partner vehicles could take about three to five years from agreement to deployment.
Interestingly, there’s speculation that Tesla may prefer to retain control and not outright sell its autonomy technology. Instead, it might generate ongoing income through licensing agreements, making each new Tesla on the road a contributor to Tesla’s ecosystem—potentially earning small monthly fees per vehicle globally.
