In contrast to cold rationality, humans turn to other sources of meaning—beliefs that are often labeled as supernatural, paranormal, or religious. These beliefs, despite lacking grounding in empirical evidence or objective reality, offer powerful narratives that provide explanation, purpose, and comfort.
By creating stories about gods, spirits, or divine plans, humans find a way to organize their experiences and imbue their lives with a sense of purpose. These narratives serve as organizing principles, helping individuals feel more at home in an indifferent universe. They give life a structure that rationality alone cannot provide, fulfilling a psychological need for hope and belonging.
