The closures extend beyond individual brands. Since mid-2025, many fast-food giants such as Burger King, KFC, and McDonald's have significantly reduced their footprints. For instance, Burger King, which entered China in 2005 with over 1,400 outlets at its peak, closed over 100 stores in just six months. Notably, the historic Burger King in Shenzhen's SeaWorld, operational for 12 years, is shutting down.
KFC, an icon of China's dining scene for decades, is also trimming its presence, with some long-standing stores in Nanjing and other cities closing, signaling a loss of entrenched consumer habits. McDonald's, although still operating, has seen its locations in key cities in China—and in Hong Kong—close or face indefinite cessation, signifying a strategic retreat amidst the declining market.
