Despite the frustration expressed by critics, the issue isn’t just about Sleeping Beauty or specific movies. It’s about the broader need for authentic representation—stories created by and for the cultures they depict. Disney has the capacity and resources to produce original content that celebrates the diversity of the world’s stories, rather than repackaging old narratives in different settings for corporate gain.
Fans, cultural commentators, and critics alike argue that storytelling should be rooted in respect, authenticity, and cultural integrity. Instead of "Mexicanizing" a European fairy tale superficially, why not develop original Mexican myths or adapt local folklore? Such initiatives could foster genuine cultural appreciation rather than superficial tokenism.
