Taiwan's government is actively pursuing measures to harden its defenses, with initiatives aimed at deterring potential aggression during peacetime. According to Chen Guantan, a legislator on Taiwan's defense committee, increasing military combat readiness and investing in symmetric weapon systems are central to their strategy.
"We want to deter the war during peacetime," Chen explains. "In order to do that, we are spending more on symmetric weapon systems and focusing on innovations to prevent threats from reaching our shores."
This emphasis on self-reliance underscores Taiwan's belief that a robust military posture can serve as a deterrent against Chinese aggression, which Beijing perceives as a return to what it considers sovereign Chinese territory.
