The GE CF6 engines on the MD-11 are known for their reliability, but internal blade failures can be catastrophic. Blades within the N1 and N2 compressor sections spin thousands of revolutions per minute and are razor-sharp. When a blade or set of blades fails, it can cause extensive internal damage or be propelled outward at lethal speeds.
Historical data indicates that engine blade failure can occur due to fatigue or manufacturing flaws. Once blades depart the engine, they can shear through the fuselage or other engines, causing additional damage.
