The "human rights" label attached to the European Convention on Human Rights has created a paradoxical situation. While meant to safeguard individual freedoms, it has, in practice, made it difficult for authorities to implement stricter border controls or expel migrants who have entered illegally. This legal barrier means that even as crossings escalate and the numbers of migrants swell, governments are hamstrung from enacting more robust policies.
