One of the critical updates concerned Tesla's ongoing development of battery cells. Musk acknowledged that Tesla's pursuit of dry cathode battery technology has turned out to be more complex than anticipated. While dry cathode offers potential cost advantages over traditional wet cathode batteries, scaling it to high-volume, reliable manufacturing has proven difficult.
"If I could go back, I would have chosen wet cathode instead of dry," Musk admitted. Despite these hurdles, Tesla remains optimistic about the success of the dry cathode approach, expecting it to eventually offer a competitive edge. The company is also scaling up battery cell production at Tesla facilities, along with sourcing from suppliers to meet booming demand.
