This neglect of governance design is viewed as a potential Achilles’ heel: without explicit plans for societal structures, democratic processes, or stability mechanisms, physical infrastructure alone cannot ensure the survival or prosperity of space colonies. Civilizational failure—be it dictatorship, violence, or societal collapse—would undermine all the physical achievements.
In essence, the problem of how humanity governs itself—especially beyond Earth—is as crucial as how rockets are built. This is a monumental engineering challenge on its own—one that has historically been neglected in favor of technological feats.
