The city’s transit system has seen a surge not only in assaults but also firearm-related violence. Recent shootings on buses and at transit centers have resulted in injuries, some life-threatening, some fatal. For instance, on President’s Day, two individuals were shot on a bus near South Center Boulevard. Witnesses report that suspects managed to escape, despite a significant police response involving drones, K-9 units, and even helicopters.
In one disturbing video, a fight erupts between groups of youths with guns, illustrating a new normal: guns are now commonplace on the streets and transit routes. The outbreaks of violence often involve minors or young adults, many armed and emboldened by the perceived lack of consequences.
