As long as policymakers continue to prioritize cosmetic fixes over fundamental reforms—like accountability, mental health treatment, and effective addiction management—the crisis is unlikely to recede. Until then, California will continue to be a kind of dystopian experiment in trying to manage what might be an impossible problem.
And for those living in California, it’s an ongoing, frustrating reality—a place where innovation is tested not necessarily on solutions but on how creatively the problem can be hidden or redirected.
