Initially, Hung Lee believed the North Korean propaganda about the United States and South Korea—that they were imperialist enemies exploiting and threatening North Korea. However, as he studied abroad and interacted with Chinese society, he started to see discrepancies between the propaganda and reality. For example, he questioned why North Korea restricted travel and why its citizens couldn't freely explore the world like Chinese or South Korean citizens. Over time, these questions gradually eroded his trust in the regime's narratives.
