In September 2014, during a national holiday, Hung Lee and his family traveled from Pyongyang to Seoul. They paid a tribute to ancestors before returning—an act that in hindsight, symbolized their intentions to seek a better life outside North Korea. The escape involved covertly traveling through China, where Hung Lee's father’s official status and possession of his own passport made their journey possible. Unlike most North Koreans, who face severe restrictions and lack identification documents, they were able to use their passports to flee.
