An armed man fires into the darkness, killing the neighbor he feared was the enemy. As lights flicker and tensions rise, it becomes apparent that the real "monster" was not an external creature but the human tendency to turn on each other under fear and uncertainty.
In the chilling climax, two observers — likely extraterrestrial beings observing human nature — comment on the pattern of societal self-destruction. They note that the tools of conquest are often thoughts, prejudices, and suspicion, which can destroy from within far more effectively than physical weapons.
