In Mexico, taxi drivers frequently face extortion—paying "piso" or fees—often to criminal organizations tied to groups like the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Refusal or resistance to pay extortion can result in brutal violence, and unfortunately, Irma became a grim symbol of this brutal reality.
