Using a rough estimate of 50% of box office revenue as actual income—accounting for international markets, taxes, and distribution splits—allows for a more realistic view of profitability. When doing so, even The Force Awakens, which seemed highly profitable, nets around $300 million in profit. However, Rise of Skywalker, despite crossing a billion dollars at the box office, is estimated to have lost about $150 million after marketing and other expenses.

Most notably, Solo is universally recognized as a box office failure, losing around $103 million just based on production costs. When factoring in marketing and other expenses, the decline becomes even more pronounced.
