While Mexico produces around 50 metric tons of pure heroin annually, Afghanistan’s production reaches an astonishing 1,000 metric tons. This makes Afghanistan by far the world's leading producer of narcotics, dwarfing the efforts of Mexico and other drug-producing regions.

What sets Afghanistan apart from other drug-producing nations is that its economy is almost entirely centered around one illicit export: opium, which is processed into heroin and morphine. Unlike Mexico, which has diversified sectors such as petroleum, construction, transportation, and agriculture, Afghanistan’s economic activities are overwhelmingly dominated by the opium trade.
