In the aftermath of Escobar’s death, paramilitary groups, remnant cartel factions, and other criminal organizations surged to fill the void. Ironically, these groups became the largest criminal organizations on the planet. Their rapid proliferation and increased brutality underscored the dangerous unintended consequence of targeting individual kingpins: instead of dismantling the drug trade, authorities inadvertently contributed to its expansion and diversification.
