Regulators like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) could intervene if companies are deceptive or violate their privacy promises, but staffing and enforcement are limited. Moreover, if agencies or private actors misuse or mishandle data, accountability becomes difficult.
Internationally, stricter regulations exist, and companies like Clear View AI have been banned or fined in places like Europe, where GDPR enforces strict privacy protections.
