During these nightly excursions, the princesses and their princely partners dance from dusk till dawn, their shoes worn to shreds—symbolic of their reckless and scandalous behavior. The soldier even steals a golden cup as a token of his discovery. When he reports back to the king, he reveals the secret entrance and the underground palace, leading to the princesses’ confession and his subsequent marriage to the eldest daughter, who is deemed the most suitable choice given her maturity.
