Chinese-led projects have come under scrutiny for massive environmental and social impacts. The Daras Sakor development, covering 90,000 hectares with a deep-water port, luxury resort, and airport—built partly within protected mangrove forests—displaced indigenous communities, damaged ecosystems, and fueled accusations of land grabs. Locals expressed frustration over broken promises of compensation and the loss of livelihoods, especially in fishing communities along the Mong River where Chinese dams caused ecological havoc, fish stock declines, and water shortages.
