Part 2/8:
According to reports aired during Hawaii News Now, eviction rates on Maui have dramatically increased this year. Phone calls to mediation services have more than quadrupled compared to last year, indicating a sharp rise in residents facing eviction. Specifically, there have been 39 cases in September and 64 in October so far, with additional cases continuing to emerge.
This trend follows the lifting of a previous eviction moratorium instituted after the 2023 fires—a measure intended to help displaced residents recover from the disaster. Once the moratorium was lifted, the number of evictions surged, exposing the fragile nature of housing stability for many.
