The film attempts to fit in numerous characters—scientists, mercenaries, families—yet none are compelling. The supposed protagonist, Scarlett Johansson, is a muddled figure, neither villain nor hero, contributing little to the story's emotional core. Other characters, like the teenage boyfriend, are portrayed as selfish and irresponsible, insulting the audience's sense of realism. The placeholder hero, Mahershala Ali, seems destined for sacrifice but survives without meaningful development. His death is unearned and lacks gravitas, rendering the entire subplot pointless.
