Part 5/17:
Joining the British Army and the Para Regiment
At 19, Jay joined the parachute regiment, a decision driven by his desire to be part of the most elite and challenging units within the British military. He describes the rigorous physical testing, including a mile-and-a-half run under nine minutes and minimal initial fitness, as overwhelming but ultimately achievable. His persistence led him to successfully pass the selection, which prepared him for combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.
He discusses the culture of resilience cultivated in the military from a young age—walking miles to school in all weather, working paper and milk rounds, and working in a shop. These experiences built a mental toughness that served him well in the demanding environment of combat zones.
