Part 5/11:
The Role of Meaning and Purpose
A crucial aspect discussed is the importance of purpose and meaning as navigational tools in life. Victor Frankl’s seminal work, Man’s Search for Meaning, is frequently referenced. Frankl, a Holocaust survivor, observed that those who endured the worst suffering with a sense of purpose or belief in a larger meaning were more resilient. Meaning acts as an internal compass that guides us through stormy waters.
Frankl’s concept underscores that life’s suffering can be more bearable when rooted in purpose. It’s not necessarily about controlling pain or preventing tragedy but about how we respond to it. The question no longer becomes “Why did this happen?” but “What am I going to do about it?” This active approach fosters resilience and prevents despair.
