Similarly, individuals should craft their personal mission statement—not necessarily in words, but as a guiding principle that aligns their talents, passions, and higher calling. Unlike vague goals like "being happy" or "making money," a personal mission is rooted in understanding what unique contribution only you can make to the world. It’s about recognizing your talents, passions, and opportunities and channeling them toward something that benefits others and serves a higher purpose.
Rabbi Jacobson even developed a formula to help uncover this mission:
POP + P + H = M
Where:
POP = Personality, Opportunities, People, Places you've been
P = Passion
H = Higher calling or higher cause
M = Mission
