Growing up in Compton during the turbulent 1960s, Fletcher describes a rough environment that inherently toughened him. "Tough tough places make tough people," he asserts, comparing his upbringing to any dangerous area worldwide. His earliest memories involve violence, including the first time a gun was pulled on him in ninth grade, and physical abuse at the hands of an abusive father who was a preacher. Despite the contradictions, Fletcher credits his mother's loving and giving nature for balancing the brutality he endured.
