In the Life 1.0 stage, both hardware (bodies) and software (behavior and processes) are governed entirely by DNA and biological evolution. Bacteria, jellyfish, and many ancient sea creatures are prime examples. Essentially, their design is "locked in"—evolution writes the code once, and the species remains largely unchanged for millions of years, with no updates or patches. Some species, such as the coelacanth, serve as "living fossils," having remained virtually unchanged for hundreds of millions of years.
