A particularly contentious development is a university course at the University of Nottingham titled "Decolonizing Tolkien." This module reportedly teaches students that Tolkien’s depiction of races, such as orcs and darker-skinned characters, is rooted in “ethnic chauvinism” and anti-African sentiment. The course claims that the orcs, along with other "dark-skinned" groups such as Easterlings and Haradrim, are portrayed as victims of racial discrimination.
