Historically, Tron has had a modest cinematic presence. The original film debuted in 1982, followed by a less successful sequel in 2010. Both movies, along with a handful of animated series, failed to make a significant impact at the box office. Given this background, critics question Disney's decision to allocate approximately $200 million toward rebooting the franchise, assuming star power and brand recognition alone would revive its fortunes. The strategy to build Tron into a sizable franchise now seems imprudent, especially considering the past performance.
